The name Raja Ampat translates to “Four Kings” and is steeped in local mythology. According to the legend, a woman discovered seven eggs. Four of these eggs hatched into kings who ruled over the four main islands: Misool, Salawati, Batanta, and Waigeo. The remaining eggs took on different forms—a woman, a ghost, and a stone. These mystical origins lend an air of enchantment to the archipelago.
In another version of the myth, the fifth egg hatched into a woman who later washed away to Biak, married Manar Makeri, and gave birth to Gurabesi. The sixth egg became a spirit, while the seventh egg remained unhatched and turned into a revered stone king in Kali Raja (also known as Wawiyai on Waigeo Island). These captivating tales intertwine with the natural beauty of Raja Ampat, creating a sense of wonder for visitors exploring this marine paradise.
